The International Journal on Hydropower & Dams recently reported on the British Hydropower Association’s annual conference 2022, featuring a detailed write-up of the talks and topics covered during the event. The feature included our Head of Hydropower, Tom Clegg, and his session on “How to find the best place to store energy – GIS based screening for pumped storage projects”.
Tom’s presentation discussed the Fichtner developed GIS (Geographic Information System) based tool that can effectively identify and evaluate promising sites for pumped storage. Speaking on both the event and the article feature, Tom had this to say:
“It’s great to see The International Journal on Hydropower and Dams featuring the recent British Hydropower Association (BHA) conference in such detail. The session I participated in covering Pumped Storage is particularly relevant during the current energy crisis. Pumped storage hydropower can play a critical role as an enabler of renewable generation and reducing the volatility of electricity prices.
My presentation on the “Pump-IT” tool for identification and ranking of the most promising locations to build new pumped storage stations was well received. I sought to challenge the perception that all feasible pumped storage locations have already been developed. The Pump-IT tool allows us to screen large areas to identify the best places to build new pumped storage and identifies many promising opportunities.
My thanks to the BHA for allowing me to present and The International Journal on Hydropower and Dams for publishing an account of the conference.”
The International Journal on Hydropower and Dams is a bi-monthly publishing dedicated to highlighting information and developments in the hydropower industry.
