Fichtner Consulting Engineers Ltd Announces Board Member Restructure

After 28 years of dedicated service, John Weatherby stood down in February as the Managing Director of Fichtner Consulting Engineers. John has been replaced by Rob Hawcutt as Managing Director, while Duncan Abernethy has been promoted to the position of Chairman. Together, as co-leaders, they will continue to support and guide the business towards the future.

Duncan will handle client relations and external affairs, while Rob will oversee project delivery, staff, and internal matters. With both Rob and Duncan having more than 20 years of experience at Fichtner, these internal appointments aim to maintain stability and uphold the company’s commitment to delivering high quality outputs to clients. John will continue as an executive director to support the changeover before retiring later this year.

During John’s leadership, Fichtner has evolved into one of the UK’s leading engineering consultancies in the renewables, thermal power, and waste management sectors, and in recent years the company has successfully diversified to support the UK’s energy transition towards net-zero carbon, earning the team a reputation for excellence and forward-thinking solutions.

The company employs over 160 members of staff located in its offices in Stockport, Belfast, Dublin, and Glasgow, this strategic restructure leaves Fichtner well positioned to continue its growth and diversification, providing strong foundations to sustain and develop its success in the years to come.

John Weatherby, Director (Former MD)

” It is with huge satisfaction that I can hand over the reins at Fichtner to Rob and Duncan. Over many years, our team has developed Fichtner into one of the UK’s leading engineering consultancies in our fields of expertise. It gives me great pride to consider the number of projects and facilities that Fichtner has been involved with as we have grown, providing the UK with a much stronger and greener infrastructure in terms of waste management and power generation. I have no doubt that the strong management structure now in place, led by Duncan and Rob, will allow Fichtner to continue to grow and support our clients as the UK continues to transition to net zero.”

Rob Hawcutt, Managing Director

“Firstly, I would like to thank John for his leadership and vision that has seen Fichtner develop a world class workforce that is massively influential in the UK and Ireland waste and energy transition sectors. It is a privilege to be taking on the role of Managing Director at Fichtner, a company that places huge importance on the Fichtner family ethos and is a key player in delivering the energy transition infrastructure projects that are going to be needed as we transition to net zero.”

Duncan Abernethy, Chairman

“Accepting the role of Chairman, and leading Fichtner in the UK and Ireland in partnership with Rob is a great privilege. The continued success of the business relies on our fantastic and loyal clients, many of whom I look forward to catching up over the coming weeks. Fichtner has continuously grown and diversified over the last 30 years, and together Rob and I welcome the challenge of delivering continued success for the Fichtner team and the companies we have the pleasure of supporting.”
