Constructed in 1996, the 2 stream EfW recovers energy from the combustion of circa 350,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of Municipal Waste (MSW) generated in Birmingham. Fichtner provided wide ranging engineering and project management support to Veolia to enable the plant to comply with the requirements of the Waste Incineration Directive, and reduce the environmental impact of the plants operations.

In our capacity as engineering consultant and as Owner’s Engineer, our services included;

• thermal cycle simulation ;
• investigation of problems and inefficiencies in steam and condensate systems;
• development of improvement programme;
• design and specification of upgrade works which included the installation of a flue gas recirculation system, and SNCR system, and a bag-house pre-heater;
• project management all upgrade works, including full time site supervision and secondment of staff to Veolia’s team.

The upgrade works on the Tyseley ERF allowed the facility to achieve the challenging requirements of the Waste Incineration Directive which came into force for operational plants at the end of 2005. The Directive required plant to reduce emission limits and change many of the aspects of the plant designs.
