In 2020, Tate & Lyle Sugars Ltd announced plans to work towards ambitious environmental targets, with a focus on a 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and 100% beneficial use of waste by 2030.
Fichtner delivered a full decarbonisation roadmap for Tate & Lyle using a detailed and rigorous methodology. A collaborative approach was used to develop a long list of technology / fuel switching options which were evaluated against an agreed criteria to produce a short list. These options were assessed on a quantitative basis covering decarbonisation impact, financial impact, technical feasibility and socio-political considerations.
Technologies considered included deployment of:
- Biomass
- Electrification
- Renewables
- Carbon capture
- Energy storage
- Decarbonised gas (e.g. hydrogen, biogas)
- Carbon offsetting
- Industrial clusters
Options appraisal techniques included thermodynamic modelling, cost assessment and Monte Carlo simulation using @RISK software.
